Areté, an employee-owned company, is a growing research and development firm recognized for contributing to national security objectives by supplying innovative solutions to challenging technical problems faced by the United States. Our Tucson, AZ office has an immediate opening for an Engineer 1, Optical Systems reporting directly to the Senior Engineer, Optical Systems. This is an exempt non-supervisory full-time position.
The candidate will be responsible for designing, modeling, integrating, and testing optical sensor systems including vis/EO and IR cameras, LiDAR systems, and optical test equipment. Specifically, the candidate will develop test software (LabVIEW/Python) for control of prototype EO systems, test automation, and flight testing. Candidates will work in conjunction with mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, software and systems engineers, to provide integrated design solutions for Areté’s customers. Candidate’s responsibilities will also include assisting with requirements development, concept and detailed design, presentation to customer at SRR, PDR, CDR, assembly, integration, and field testing.
Develop and apply electro-optic/imaging sensor performance models
Optical sub-system and system level testing, including test design, automation and reporting
Interact with system designers, sensor designer, and suppliers to improve hardware
Present results to other staff and customers
May support outdoor field tests with occasional travel
Analyze data, algorithms, and their interaction to improve algorithm performance
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in optical engineering, physics or immediately related discipline
Strong education in fundamental optics; including the Fourier transform, beam propagation, radiometry/Etendue, imaging, etc.
Intellectual curiosity and desire for continuous learning
Understanding of optical systems, light propagation, radiometry, MTF testing, lasers
Experience building applications in LabVIEW for hardware testing
Experience with scientific programming in Matlab, Python, or similar languages
Agility to work multiple potentially disparate projects simultaneously
Strong analytical skills demonstrated through in depth physics based modeling and data analysis
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work with minimal supervision and collaborate on small teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
0 to 5 years of experience in an optical engineering role
Remote sensing systems (visible, IR, lidar)
Zemax or similar optical design software
Active security clearance
