Aston Carter Ophthalmic Technician in Phoenix, Arizona


  1. Communication & Patient Care Responsibilities

a. Acquaint all new patients with the office procedures to which they will be exposed. Inform patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how patient will be affected during the tests.

b. Obtain patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.

c. Perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include:

i. Visual Acuity

ii. Manual Lensometry

iii. Confrontational Visual Fields

iv. Stereo Testing

v. Evaluation of Motility

vi. Pupillary Function Tests

vii. Color Testing

viii. Applanation Tonometry

ix. Refractometry

x. Angle Assessment

xi. Dilation of Pupils

xii. Contact Lens Evaluations

xiii. Visual Field Testing

xiv. Optic Nerve Scanning and Optical Imaging

xv. Pachymetry

xvi. Corneal Topography

xvii. A Scan and B Scan

xviii. Other tasks specific to the physician needs as a result of new technologies.

d. Perform duties consistent with ophthalmic writer/scribe.

e. Assist physician with laser procedures.

f. Assist physician with minor surgery, maintaining practice standards of sterile technique and infection control.

g. Provide patient home care instructions and counseling.

h. Take patient blood pressure as necessary.

i. Clarify pre- and post-op instructions with patient.

j. Perform other tasks as assigned.

  1. Administrative and Work Environment Maintenance

a. Keep exposed lenses, mirrors, and prisms clean.

b. Maintain sanitary conditions in exam and procedure rooms.

c. Maintain back up levels of stock in exam and procedure rooms.

d. Maintain par levels of replacement inventory.

e. Notify pharmaceutical representatives when sample levels drop below par levels.

  1. Triage

a. Determine which patients should be taken next from the waiting room to have treatment initiated.

b. Following work-up, advise patients of who will see them next and make patients comfortable during their wait. Maintain a smooth flow of patients to the physician.

c. Handle pharmacy requests, patient phone calls and physician messages, as deemed appropriate

  1. Practice Support

a. Provide support for the Lead Ophthalmic Technicians in his or her absence(s).

b. Provide support for the Director of Clinic Services

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma; some college preferred

  2. Prior experience as ophthalmic technician or ophthalmic industry experience preferred

  3. JCAHPO certification preferred (if applicable, please provide proof of current certification)

Clinic Locations/Must be flexible and willing to travel;

 Hours: Availability Monday through Friday 715am-6pm and Saturday 8am-12pm (40-hr workweek)
