Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Barrow Neurological Institute (BNI) Director of Academic Affairs provides the overall administrative leadership and direction for the graduate medical education (GME), graduate education, continuing medical education (CME), and publications programs of the Barrow Neurological Institute.

BNI is comprised of the neurosciences service line of St. Joseph’s Hospital & Medical Center (SJHMC), and has the following components: Adult Neurosurgery, Adult Neurology, Neuro-rehabilitation, Neuropsychology, neurosciences research, neurosciences medical education, and neurosciences administrative support. BNI has GME programs (residencies and fellowships) in Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neuro-Radiology, and Neuropsychology, serves as the primary neurology clerkship site for the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix Campus (U of A COM-P), and operates a joint graduate program with Arizona State University (ASU).

This position reports to the BNI Chief Operating Officer, and works cooperatively with the BNI Designated Institutional Official (DIO). This position works collaboratively with the BNI residency and fellowship Program Directors, BNI CME course directors, the BNI-ASU Neuroscience Graduate Program Co-Director, the U of A COM-P clerkship director, the Chairs of BNI clinical and research departments, and members of the BNI management team.

Principal Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Partners with BNI residency and fellowship Program Directors and the BNI DIO to direct the administrative and operational activities of BNI graduate medical education programs. Ensures that these programs meet ACGME accreditation and Residency Review Committee (RRC) requirements for curriculum, scholarly productivity, duty hours, evaluations, education portfolios, and statistical/procedure logs. Supervises and mentors BNI graduate medical education program coordinators. Develops and oversees the annual budgets for BNI medical education programs.

  • Partners with BNI clinical and research leaders to develop and implement an annual conference and course plan, which includes weekly Grand Rounds and hands-on surgical courses. Works with BNI CME course directors to ensure that courses are of high quality and are financially successful. Ensures that CME courses comply with all Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) requirements for category 1 CME accreditation. Supervises and mentors the BNI CME conference planner. Develops and oversees the annual BNI conference and course budget.

  • Partners with BNI clinical and research leaders to develop and implement an annual plan for scholarly publications, which includes text books, books chapters, papers, abstracts, and animated visual content. Oversees the BNI Neuro-Publications Department to ensure that the output is of high quality, turnaround time for projects is acceptable, and that staffing is both affordable and adequate to meet demand for services.

  • In collaboration with BNI clinical and research leaders, facilitates strategic planning for BNI graduate medical education and graduate education programs to ensure that these programs are correctly aligned with BNI clinical and research priorities, have adequate funding sources, and are correctly positioned to attract high caliber applicants.

  • Serves as the administrative interface to education partner organizations, such as the U of A COM-P, Arizona State University, Creighton University, and A.T. Still University.

  • Partners with BNI clinical and research leaders to facilitate internal and external academic appointments and promotions for BNI clinicians and scientists.

  • Partners with BNI clinical and research leaders to develop and oversee a BNI scholarly activity repository to provide current and comprehensive documentation of scholarly activity generated by BNI clinicians and scientists.

  • Represents BNI on internal and external graduate medical education and CME committees as indicated. Represents BNI in philanthropic and charitable fundraising activities and events as indicated.

  • Supervises and mentors the manager of neurosciences academic support, who provides and facilitates academic support for the BNI Director.

  • In collaboration with the BNI informatics Director, ensures that BNI educational spaces (auditoriums, conference rooms, resident workrooms, sleep rooms) are well maintained and appropriately equipped to provide an optimal physical environment for BNI trainees.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • 5 years experience in graduate medical education

  • 3 years supervisory experience

Special Skills Required:

  • Demonstrated expertise in ACGME requirements for graduate medical education, and ACCME requirements for continuing medical education.

  • Familiarity with the American Psychological Association Commission on Accreditation (APA-CoA) and Association of Postdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology (APPCN) accreditation standards.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with physicians and researchers.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of process for peer-reviewed publications.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the continuing medical education grant process.

  • Demonstrated collaborative management style.

Preferred Education and Skills

  • Master's Degree.

  • Knowledge of allied health education.

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) to effectively communicate complex information to a variety of audiences.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively navigate a matrix organization structure.

  • Excellent listening and influencing skills.

  • Proven attention to detail, with strong analytical, critical thinking, problem solving, and time management skills.
