Under general direction of the Director of Engineering, the Mold Designer, has the overall responsibility for designing molds, fixtures, dies, and gauges based on customer supplied CAD data, prints, and specifications as well as knowledge of mold characteristics and process limitations. Additional responsibilities will include mechanical design, product improvements, documentation, production fixture design, reliability analysis as well as providing technical expertise and product knowledge using a variety of engineering disciplines. The Mold Design will also work collaboratively with other members of the Engineering team to ensure that projects are completed in a timely manner.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Determining molding parameters such as shrinkage factors, tolerances, runner/gate design and heat profiles to optimize efficiency.
Use strong analytical and system focus to create and improve design processes and procedures.
Studies specifications, engineering blueprints, tool orders, and shop data and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and cost.
Creates drawings using CAD software.
Selects standard items such as bushings and tool components to incorporate into tool design.
Draws preliminary sketches and prepares layout and detail drawing, using computer-assisted design/drafting equipment and software and standard drafting tools and equipment.
Modifies tool designs for required engineering changes and to improve tool life or performance.
Create solid models and drawings for assembly, components, tooling and fixturing in SolidWorks
Create designs that are aligned with assembly and manufacturing capabilities; perform Design-for-Manufacturing reviews
Work with Manufacturing Engineering to develop assembly, process control and quality workmanship procedures
Perform product verification and validations according to the defined design inputs and product specifications
Develop multi-level Bill-of-Materials
Write reports, specifications, correspondence, and procedures
Ensure products comply with and are certified to applicable specifications and regulatory standards
Stay abreast of any new technologies, including design software, rules, design practices etc.
Perform other tasks as assigned by manager
Bachelor of Engineering, or 10+ years of experience
3+ years of Mold Design experience, preferred
Clear understanding and knowledge of plastic injection molds. Not limited to, but including multi cavity, hot and cold runner, 3 plate, slide action, unscrewing, insert, and two shot.
Proficient in software tools including Solid Works, 3D CAD modeling and Microsoft Office applications
Knowledge of ISO 9001 and AS 9100 structure and requirements
Expertise with tools such as FMEA, FEA, DFM and statistical techniques
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with staff at all levels in the organization
In depth understanding of commodities including cable harnesses, CNC milling/lathe, PCBA, box-builds, and electronic components
Excellent problem solving, data analysis, deductive reasoning and critical thinking skills
Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
Strong manual dexterity
