General Summary

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Plans, schedules daily assignments and supervises maintenance crews engaged in the care and maintenance of streets, right of ways, parks, facilities and other projects as assigned.

  • Be able to read and understand a set of civil construction plans regarding civil layouts.

  • Instructs employees on safety, care and maintenance of equipment, machinery and tools.

  • Instructs employees and follows hazards and safety precautions, techniques, and methods used in the application of insecticides, herbicides, and cleaning chemicals.

  • Oversees and performs landscape, hardscape, irrigation and other maintenance on city properties, ROW’s and sites managed by the city.

  • Keeps work, time, and material records and prepares reports.

  • Prepares and works special events including coordination with vendors, staff and patrons.

  • Supervises and performs equipment repair including welding, metal fabrication and wood construction projects.

  • Supervises and operates power driven machinery such as a chain saw, pruning equipment, powered hedge trimmer, or other similarly sized equipment.

  • Supervise and manage work crews, contracted crews and/or inmate crews as needed to complete city-wide tasks and projects.

Performs related work as required.

Minimum and Preferred Entrance Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma (or GED equivalent)

  • At least three (3) years of related work experience as a maintenance supervisor.

  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.

Licenses or Certifications

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.

  • Arizona Department of Agriculture Pest Management Division Commercial Applicator License within 90 days of hiring including type 1 Industrial & Institutional, type 3 Ornamental & Turf Pest Management, type 4 Right-of-Way Pest Management

  • Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A with Trailer and Tank endorsements within six months of hiring.

Other Job Requirements

  • This position primary function is to complete city-wide landscaping, hardscapes, irrigation and other maintenance on city properties, ROW’s and sites managed by the city. Would be responsible of overseeing inmate workforce.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MUTCD - Flagger Certified within six months of hire date

  • NRPA - Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI)

  • ALCA – Arizona Certified Landscape Professional (CLP)

  • NRPA – Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP)

  • ISA – Certified Arborist (CA)

  • NSPF - Certified Pool/Spa Operator (CPO)

  • STMA - Certified Sports Field Manager (CSFM)

Competencies for Successful Performance of Job Duties

Knowledge of:

Vacation: Full time positions accrue 88 hours of vacation leave per year for the first 3 years of service; accruals increase with years of service.

Sick Leave: Full time positions accrue 96 hours of sick leave/year.

Holidays: Full time positions (minimum 40 hours per week) accrue 9 paid holidays per year. Holidays include New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Health Insurance: Positions with a minimum of 40 hours per week are eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits. Paid employee life insurance, AD&D, short and long-term disability benefits for full time positions.

Retirement Benefits: Positions with a minimum of 40 hours per week are eligible for are provided retirement Benefits through ASRS and PSPRS. Part-Time positions that work 20 hours or more in a 20 week period are eligible for ASRS.
