National Park Service Maintenance worker in Lees Ferry, Arizona

Responsibilities This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is Jan through Nov, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions. These positions provide routine maintenance on park facilities and infrastructure. Duties include: cleaning restrooms, vault toilets, visitor centers, picnic areas, and camp areas, along with collecting and recycling trash; a variety of maintenance and construction tasks on visitor centers, amphitheaters, roads, trails, and park housing. Assist higher grade maintenance employees on duties including demolition, construction, finish carpentry, plumbing, painting, and concrete work of the park facilities and infrastructure. Incumbent operates vehicles on all types of roads, including rough dirt roads. Safely and effectively, uses hand power tools required for the job and has the ability to maintain these tools properly Area Information: Lees Ferry is located in northern Arizona on the Colorado River where the Paria River joins from the north, and where the southern-most point of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area meets the uppermost section of Grand Canyon National Park. This is the only place within Glen Canyon where visitors can drive to the Colorado River in over 700 miles of canyon country, right up to the first rapid in the Grand Canyon. This location figured prominently in the exploration and settlement of northern Arizona. Lees Ferry is located downstream of Glen Canyon Dam and 9 miles straight distance, or 45 road miles, from Page, Arizona, the location of the recreation area's headquarters. Page, Arizona is located on the Arizona-Utah border, 135 miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona, the nearest larger community. Page looks out on beautiful Lake Powell which offers boating, associated water sports recreation and fishing. The surrounding land of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area offers beautiful red rock country for hiking and backcountry recreational activity. Page is centrally located to many other National Parks, such as the Grand Canyon, Zion, Arches and Canyonlands to name a few. Page offers normal community amenities such as shopping, medical and dental facilities, schools K-12 and college courses available through local Coconino Community College. The area enjoys typical high desert climate with temperatures ranging from 100+ in summer to mid-teens in winter with low humidity and sunshine most days of the year. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work weekends, and holidays. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
